Praise Shadows is delighted to present Nicole Wilson's durational performance, Ötzi, at PHOTOFAIRS New York. Ötzi debuted at Praise Shadows Art Gallery in June of 2021 before traveling to Three Kings Tattoo studios in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and London. The exhibition is named after a Copper Age male whose body was discovered in the 1990s on the border of Austria and Italy, and the body was naturally preserved due to freezing temperatures and weather conditions of the Alps. 61 tattoos have been discovered on Ötzi's body-- making him the oldest known example of tattoos.
After a decade of research, Wilson presents a time-based performance that encompasses tattoos, blood, and the blockchain. Beginning in 2012, Wilson tatooed herself with the famed glacier mummy's tattoos using her own blood. She then documented the process of them fading as her body reabsorbed them. Upon discovering new tattoos on Ötzi's body, Wilson re-executed the project in 2016.

Live Tattooing Event at The Gaf West
On September 7, 2023, Praise Shadows Art Gallery and artist Nicole Wilson hosted a live tattooing event at The Gaf West in honor of Wilson's presentation at Photofairs NEW YORK. Collectors, curators, and artists who purchased tattoo designs were invited to be tattooed by an artist from Three Kings Tattoo Brooklyn studio. The night included a special bonus event of art trivia, hosted by Jeopardy champion Austin Tyler Rogers.
