How art changed artist Melissa Joseph

The work of Brooklyn-based artist Melissa Joseph contains layers of meaning and materiality. Affixed inside an array of frames (from tins to tires), the artist uses a felting technique that rewards viewers for lingering to let images emerge. Here, portraits and memories are captured with intimacy, brought to life by a process of bonding fibers together.

The artist’s work, which spans fiber arts and painting, is currently on display as part of the Brooklyn Museum’s “Brooklyn Artists Exhibition” (through Jan. 26) and in a two-person show at Boston’s Praise Shadows Gallery (through Feb. 15). In addition to a packed slate of upcoming shows, recently, she was awarded the 5th annual UOVO Prize, which will encompass the creation of a 50×50-foot mural on the fine art storage facility UOVO in Brooklyn and a public installation at the Brooklyn Museum later this year.

As part of our series “How Art Changed Me,” which spotlights the impact of art on individual’s lives, we asked Joseph the question “How has art changed you?”
