More than a century ago, there was a goat named King Skellig Mör. And what a goat he was.

 

Born in Ireland, he earned his fame in Boston, so beloved that he inspired a long-running legal battle for his custody. In 1909, he was presented to the crew of the battleship Vermont at the Charlestown Navy Yard in a broad green sash, an American flag on each horn.

 

“This noble animal has been the source of more fighting than any living being since the days of Helen of Troy,” Suffolk District Attorney Arthur Hill said at the ceremony, the Globe reported. “Like Helen, the Skellig Mor is the highest type of beauty of his kind...”
