Much of After Image explores my relationship with the two women who have profoundly shaped my life. In this life-sized portrait, bringing them together felt essential, a counterbalance to the image of myself with my mother. The scale of these works reminds me of the power in Barkley Hendricks’ paintings, where life-sized figures create an intimate, almost immersive presence. Encountering these photographs, composed of an array of smaller pieces, transforms the surface into a window, its thin black frames acting as mullions, inspired by the historic buildings I’ve called home during my time in America. This work reflects on how both women continue to shape me, not only as a son and husband but also as an artist.
