The Spring Collection series features leather offcuts after the production of luxury accessories, in particular the Spring 2016 collections by Marc Jacobs and Chloe. Jean Shin reconstructs the “body” of these hides. The organic contour of the animal skin is on the outside, while the precise geometric leather cutouts create an empty, negative space. The enigmatic voids promise the latest objects of desire that can never be fulfilled. These fashion industry leftovers hint at the elaborate, often toxic manufacturing process that transforms raw materials into consumer products and the consequent waste it produces as “deadstock”.
