Sourced from Wu’s family members living in both Taiwan and New Jersey, the tea leaves stand as metaphors for the Asian cultures. They are combined with New England plants such as grapevines, maple stems, and azalea leaves, as a means of articulating and navigating Wu’s dual identities as a Taiwanese immigrant and a New Englander. Gold is a metaphor for success. Each leaf is gilded uniformly, yet they retain their individuality through differences in shape and form. Some areas are left ungilded, recognizing that not everyone achieves the same kind of success or a desire to assimilate.
